This vase depicts a theme of the bright sunlight days of summer to the golden leaves of autumn - perhaps a reference to a point in time of age, reflection upon one's own life.

The season of summer symbolizes the longest days of the year – a time when sunlight is at its brightest and the sun shines in all its glory.

The colored leaves of autumn turning gold symbolize a long and golden life.

The blue flower is the highly prized morning glory, or asagao, means morning face. Asagao symbolizes completion and perfection.

The tsubaki or camellia rose pink color flower is named egao means smiling face.

This vase symbolizes contentment and happiness by the symbolism of the two flowers, asagao and egao.

The artist, Asakura Isokichi 2nd, was very successful and won many awards, and held distinctive positions in his profession.  He was happy and always had a smiling face. This vase also symbolizes the artist, a happy and contented, humble man, who achieved the highest accomplishments in artistic pottery.

There are many Japanese proverbs with the word egao, see link http://www.japanippon.com/proverbs.htm

Other symbolism on this vase:

Background is boton or peony pattern; top border is a wave pattern; and bottom border is the tasuki or cross cords pattern with figure 8 symbol.
