Note: I am noting here this cat form is the same cat form
(smaller size) found with backstamp MM HAND PAINTED JAPAN in
red. This particular backstamp was found with impressed MM
and also with other backstamp from Moriyama. (see Seyei for more information)
It is quite possible that the maker of Moriyama provided these sleeping cats to Hotta Yu Shoten & Co. who stamp marked the cats with their own trademark. Since there is minisical information on Hotta Yu Shoten, I cannot confirm if they were only a trading company. Also I am noting here that the Hotta Yu Shoten stamp mark found on a gilded sleeping cat is the same form as the MM Hand Painted Japan sleeping cat. The only difference is size. The hand painting on all three cats, MM Hand Painted Japan, Empress of Japan, and Hotta Yu Shoten, are the same style. There is some sort of relationship between all three companies. I suspect that there is only one maker who provided cats to all three companies who in turn stamp marked their cat with their trademark. For the record, all three cats are made of the same type of material, high quality bone china porcelain matched to Noritake. |
