KAIYOSHA (開洋社)
var. KAIYO-SHA, KAIYO COMPANY

Based on information found at the Modern Ceramics Historical Museum and Study Group of Modern Ceramics, Matsumura Kusuke established the pottery wholesale company Kaiyosha (開洋社) in Nagoya with several other ceramic artists in the year 1878 for the purpose of exporting porcelain overseas.  The Kaiyosha was dissolved in 1885.

Based on this information, cloisonne porcelain wares signed Kaiyosha date between 1878 to 1885 and were made by Matsumura Kusuke or under his supervision.  There were many notable artists who decorated cloisonne porcelain for the Kaiyosha. Signature marks provided below under Kaiyosha.

The company Kaiyosha made cloisonne porcelain ware for the Nagoya Shippo Kaisha.  Some wares are marked with Kaiyosha and Shippo Kaisha signatures.  Some wares are marked with Kaiyosha and Hichozan signatures.  Some wares are marked with Kaiyosha.  Some Kaiyosha signatures include the name Takeuchi for Takeuchi Chiubei (Chubei).  Some signatures include Dai Nihon or Nihon.

HACHI-KU SIGNATURE FOR MATSUMURA HACHIJIRO (KUSUKE)

The artist Matsumura Hachijiro sometimes signed his pieces Hachiku that appeared as a double roof top or double mountain top with the kanji character 九 below.

Signature in blue on left -
八九松村造
Hachi-ku (var. Hachiku) Matsumura zo
Hachi-ku Matsumura Made

This signature mark most likely belongs to Matsumura Hachijiro who was adopted by Matsumura Kusuke (var. Kyusuke) and continued the family ceramist line of artists under the name Matsumura Kusuke.

Here in this signature mark, Hachi-ku is a contraction for two artist names:
八 = Hachi, for Hachijiro [次郎]
九 = Ku, for Kusuke [松村助]

This signature mark was most likely used to differentiate Hachijiro from his adoptive father Kusuke.

Matsumura Hachijiro signed his porcelain wares Hachiku (八九) and were made around 1886 Meiji era.  The hachi appears like a double roof or mountain top symbol with the character 九 below.

Confirmation found on another signature by Matsumura Hachijiro with his Japan patent number 2797.  The patent 2797 shows Matsumura Hachijiro as the patent holder and date 1886 August 10.

These signatures were found on porcelain ware made by Matsumura and sold by Tashiro Shoten (Tashiro Company).

Matsumura Kusuke (Hachijiro) is a notable ceramic artist who was adopted into the Matsumura Family of ceramic artists who are famous for their porcelain and hand painting with a heritage going back to the 16thC to Maruyama Painting School.

      Shun
Based on information found at http://www.arakishuseikan.ecweb.jp/20100507.html I am updating my previous notation on the impressed mark Shunka (春花) and noting this is the trade mark signature of the Seto artist Kato Shunka (加藤春花) who marked his wares (春花) inside an oval.  He was born around 1850 in Seto and later lived in Tokyo when he became a famous artist during the Meiji era. Resouces state he was the first child of Tokusaburo Masanobu.  Based on these wares, Kato Shunka was an artist for Matsumura and Tashiro.

Ceramics: The Seto Ceramics SchooL, Yamashita, Eiichi, 1987 -

Among the others, MATSUMURA HACHIJIRO contributed greatly to the development of ceramics in the area around
Nagoya....The Seto Ceramics School constructed the first coal kiln in this region in 1902 with the use of a prefectural
subsidy of ¥800. Although this attempt attracted the interest of the townspeople who wondered "whether white ceramics could be fired with black coal," it was reported that repeatedly the results were failure. It was later in the same year that MATSUMURA HACHIJIRO in Nagoya invented a single kiln of the inverted flame type. Coal kilns began to spread
gradually in various regions at this time in consequence of the research conducted on them.
