Matsumura Hachijiro also known as Kusuke
was a major artist at Tashiroya owned by Ichiroji Tashiro.
Hachijiro created and patented Hinomoto-yaki Porcelain.
Hinomoto-yaki Patent 2797 is found on eggshell porcelain fancy ware and
a fine Pedestal Tea Set is shown below. The trade mark of Tashiroya contains the kanji characters 松 Matsu and may represent the name Matsumura. |

Based on information found at the Modern
Ceramics Historical Museum and Study Group of Modern Ceramics, Matsumura
Kusuke established the pottery wholesale company Kaiyosha
(開洋社) in Nagoya with several other ceramic artists in the year 1878 for
the purpose of exporting porcelain overseas. The Kaiyosha was
dissolved in 1885. Based on this information, cloisonne porcelain wares signed Kaiyosha date between 1878 to 1885 and were made by Matsumura Kusuke or under his supervision. There were many notable artists who decorated cloisonne porcelain for the Kaiyosha. Signature marks provided below under Kaiyosha. The company Kaiyosha made cloisonne porcelain ware for the Nagoya Shippo Kaisha. Some wares are marked with Kaiyosha and Shippo Kaisha signatures. Some wares are marked with Kaiyosha and Hichozan signatures. Some wares are marked with Kaiyosha. Some Kaiyosha signatures include the name Takeuchi for Takeuchi Chiubei (Chubei). Some signatures include Dai Nihon or Nihon. |

Frank Brinkley, Edward Greey, 1885 - Between the years 1596 and 1685, ten Japanese Keramists visited Korea, and there produced a number of pieces, most of which were sent to Japan. Although this attempt attracted the interest of the townspeople who wondered "whether white ceramics could be fired with black coal," it was reported that repeatedly the results were failure. It was later in the same year that MATSUMURA HACHIJIRO in Nagoya invented a single kiln of the inverted flame type.
