Moriyama Ware is the traditional pottery made in Mori-machi, Shuchi-gun, Shizuoka Pref. It was founded in 1909 by Shukichi Nakamura, who was influenced by Kato Toshiro, the founder of Seto Ware. The name “Moriyama” comes from the village name. In the early days, the items such as clay pipes or water vases were produced. Through making one mistake after another, he gradually improved the techniques and started to make daily necessities such as tea utensils, flower vessels, sake vessels and food vessels, which became very popular at the time. The style of Moriyama Ware is descended from Shitoro Ware, one of Enshu Seven Kilns, which is simple but has high artistic taste. At the present time, there are four studios in a quiet village at the foot of the mountain and are continuing this tradition. Each of them has its own taste. Among them, the most famous is Akayaki (red pottery) made at Seison Pottery Studio, which is worth being called “the art of fire.” The other kilns are Nakamura, Tame, and Seizan.

RED MM WREATH HAND PAINTED JAPAN & MM IMPRESSED MARKS



Mark found on nemurineko (sleeping cat) made of bone china porcelain and I found a sleeping cat with the 1933 World's Fair Century of Progress label along with MM Hand Painted Japan stamp mark. This mark also appears with an impressed MM within a horizontal diamond. The black stamp mark appears with a YAGO mark below

MM WREATH HAND PAINTED JAPAN (IN BLACK) BELOW YA-YAGO シ Si or Shi According to Georges Bouvier, the Ya-Yago mark is associated with Kutani kilns, and that relationship maybe that Kutani kiln artist were contracted to hand paint certain items.


MM WREATH HAND PAINTED JAPAN (IN RED) FOUND ON WARE WITH IMPRESSED IGETA (DIAMOND) LOGO WITH MM INSIDE. The Igeta (Diamond) logo mark is a modified form of the Ya-Yago mark. It may be that artists-kilns using the Igeta symbol may be related to Kutani kilns and that relationship may be that they were contracted to hand paint certain items.

The Moriyama China Basket Banner backstamp is very similar to the Seyei Fine China Basket Banner backstamp. According to Carole Bess White, Made in Japan books, the Moriyama basket trade mark belongs to Seyei.
