The artist-kiln Okamoto of Kobe, Hyogo had two background
colors, brownish black and pewter gray, with applied cloisonne.
Another background employed by the artist was tree
bark ground. The artist also liked tsuru cranes
and many of his wares depict cranes. The background on these vases are called by Westeners, Treebark or Tree Bark, or this type of shippo, Tree Bark Cloisonne, and in my opinion, it looks more like stone with a lacquer finish. The famous artist Chiubei Takeuchi invented Ishinomaki (Blackstone) Lacquer Porcelain Cloisonne, and I wonder if this is the same type of lacquer porcelain cloisonne but by a different artist. The dating on these vases are during the Meiji era with kanji signature. Rihei Okamoto [岡本利兵衛], was from Motomachi, Kobe, Hyogo. He was a noted artist of Urushi (lacquerware) but also proficient in other mediums: lacquerware, woodwork carving, netsuke, and stoneware (earthenware - faience), enameling on metal, cloisonne, and screen painting. His heritage is from the notable Hyogo Okamoto family of lacquerware artists, chisellers and swordmakers. Rihei Okamoto exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition (aka Chicago World's Fair) [lacquer vase, stoneware (earthenware -faience), wood carving] and the 1904 International Exposition (aka St. Louis World's Fair) [netsuke and porcelain flower vases]. |
