The Shofu family of pottery artists began
about 1861 by Shofu Yoshisada in Kyoto.
Yoshisada developed the family business into a
thriving Kyoto porcelain ware manufacturing company.
In 1906, the company was re-organized by Shofu
Katei. The company was known as Shofu Toki
Goshi Kaisha and commonly known by westerners as the
Shofu Porcelain Manufacturing Company. By
1915, Katei was president of the company. The
company developed into a major
manufacturer and exporter of porcelain ware and
dental products. The acronym SNB stands for Nagoya Shofu Branch which is their factory located in Nagoya. Porcelain wares marked SNB were made at this factory in Nagoya. Porcelain wares not marked SNB were made at their factory in Kyoto. Shofu porcelain was made in Kiyomizu and called Kiyomizu yaki, Kiyomizu ware. Shofu Kajo who is better known by his artist name Shofu Katei also signed his pieces Shofu-tei. He is most famous for the Nippon decoration style called moriage, slip enamel decoration. His unique moriage decoration appears like applied work or raised relief work. |

References Brinkley, Japan it's art and literature, Volume 8, 1904 - Shofu Katei, a potter of Kyomizu, came thither, in 1850, from Owari, of which province he was a native. His original name was Kito Kajuro, but when settling in Kyoto he called himself Katei, and assumed the art name of Shofu-tei. He did not distinguish himself for originality. The only point to be noted with reference to his faience is that, being an ardent devotee and student of Buddhism, his decorative motives were often of a religious character, as, for example, the Shichi-fuku-jin, the Jugo Ddji, the Juroku Rakan, the Rishi, and so forth. The first Shofu-tei was succeeded by his son, of the same name, in 1864, who still carries on the industry with considerable success. The Japan Year Book, 1906 - Kitomizu-yaki.—Kiyomizu, one of the oldest and most important centres of Japanese pottery, fully maintains the tradition of the past, possessing as it does in SEIFU YOHEI, MIUBA CHIKSEN, TAKAHASHI DOHACHI, SHIMIZU ROKBEI, SHOFU KATEI, especially the first two, potters of first order. Yohei is greater than his father of the same name who died in 1860, though this remark may not apply to Dohachi and Rokbei whose predecessors of the same names certainly possessed greater technical and artistic ability. Seifu is especially great in celadon and monochromes of reddish hue and his attempt to reproduce old Chinese masterpieces has also resulted in delightful specimens. At any rate Seifu enjoys by common consent the reputation of being two of the foremost living potters of Japan, the other being Miyogawa Kozan of Yokohama, both of whom are on the honourable list of Art Commissioners to the Imperial Court. The Japan magazine: a representative monthly of things Japanese, Volume 4, Issue 1913, Japan magazine company, 1913 - The porcelain turned out by the Nagoya Porcelain Company and the Shofu Company of Kyoto have been competing successfully with western wares in all the markets of the world. The Pottery & Glass Salesman, Volume 15, 1917 - Two Japanese, S. Shofu and K. (Koji) Fujioka, son and son-in-law, respectively, of a prominent porcelain manufacturer in the Far East, have been in East Liverpool for a visit of inspection of porcelain and pottery manufacturing plants. Their trip will cover practically every city in the United States in which such plants are located. As they expressed themselves they "are here to find out new things about the industry" with which they are associated in Japan. Mr. Fujioka, who is ceramic engineer for the Shofu Porcelain Company, manufacturers of electric and chemical porcelain, located at Kyoto, Japan, says their pottery employs about 400 people and operates twelve kilns. Mr. Shofu, who is accompanying Mr. Fujioka on his trip through the States, is a student at Alfred University in New York State, where he is studying ceramic so as to fit himself for the assistant managership of the plant when he returns to Japan.
